Administering a Subcutaneous Injection
*The medication should be refrigerated upon arrival and between dosages
Past prescriptions may have included a different number of vials. Now, some patients will only receive one vial. The quantity on the prescription is not related to the quantity of vials.
Step 1: Wash your hands for about 20 seconds.
Step 2: Gather all the supplies that will be needed: needle and syringes, alcohol pads, gauze, bandages, and a puncture resistant container to discard the needles and syringes.
Step 3: Clean the injection site: rub the area where the injection will be administered with an alcohol pad and let it dry before administering. Alternate injection sites with each injection. Injection sites: side or back of the arm, abdomen, or front of thigh.
Step 4: Prepare the syringe with medication: make sure that the correct medication and amount of medication is being used.
Preparing a Syringe
Step 1: Remove the cap from the vial and clean the rubber stopper with an alcohol pad.
Step 2: Pull the plunger on the syringe back until it is at the dose that should be administered.
Step 3: Insert the needle into the vial and push the end of the syringe to release excess air into the vial. When drawing the remaining doses, make sure the needle is not inserted into the same hole. Puncture a new area to prevent the vial from leaking.
Step 4: Turn the vial upside down and withdraw the amount of medication needed for the injection.
Step 5: Remove any air bubbles before administering. Tap the syringe until the air bubbles float to the top. Push the air bubbles out once they reach the top.
Step 6: Administer the medication.
Vials are filled using a certified and calibrated pump to ensure the correct amount of medication is inserted into the vial.
